Have you heard the phrase, “Fake it til you make it”?

Often we talk about it in reference to being confident, feeling as if you belong, or achieving success. And when someone told this to me the other day in a joking manner, it stayed with me throughout the day.

The Lord doesn’t want us to fake it til we make it—He wants us to lean on Him so that we can make it.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus’ character reveals that we aren’t supposed to fake it or to simply try and survive on our own. In Psalm 103:13 we see that the Lord has compassion on us. 1 John 4:8 tells us that God is love. In the book of Exodus, it says that God is gracious (Exodus 34:6).

And then another popular verse about Jesus’ character that we’ve all read the verses in Matthew 11 about Jesus and the yoke He carries:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30 NIV

There’s endless things we could learn about the character of our Savior—and one of them is that He doesn’t want us to be a fake version with Him. The person who says, “I’m fine, God, I don’t need You’re help,” when you truly do need His help.

Friend, there is no shame in calling on the name of Jesus. The greatest prophets and apostles called on the name of Jesus in their weakest moments and that didn’t disqualify their faith. And the same goes for you—if you cry out to the Lord and ask for help, it doesn’t put a label on you that says, “She’s unqualified,” or “He isn’t truly a strong Christian.”

As we go into this new week, I want you to ask yourself: what have I been faking so that I can make it? And how can I surrender it to the Lord?

Let’s live out this new week and month with the knowledge that the Lord knows who we are—weary and burdened we may be—and He loves us dearly.
