‘Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.’
1 Timothy 1:15 NIV

This is a short verse and a short sentence, but it’s packed with meaning. Paul, the author of first and second Timothy, is aware of his past. And the beautiful thing is that he’s not ashamed of it. In fact, he mentions his testimony many times in his letters.

In the next verse he goes on to say this:

‘But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.’
1 Timothy 1:16-17 NIV

What Paul writes is an incredible and honest testament to God’s grace. All of it was for His glory. Not for Paul’s, that people might say, “Look at his transformation!” But rather that people would say, “Look at the Lord’s grace and power!”

So often we look at ourselves—or others—and say, “They’re too far gone.” Sometimes it’s out of disdain because we don’t want to be in heaven with them since they were a jerk. Sometimes it’s because we just see them as hopeless, they have turned their backs.

But when we look at the stories of people who gave their life to Christ and were transformed by His grace, we should immediately take back our words and say, “If it is His will, let it be done.”

Paul makes this point by saying, “I was the worst of sinners! But all of that was so that Christ could display his patience, that other’s might receive eternal life.”

What Paul writes is not only supposed to encourage you to not look down on others’ doubt (Jude 1:22) but also to share your testimony. Someone who thinks that they are too far gone might not realize that a few years ago, you thought the exact same thing. And now look at you—walking with the Lord in faith, trusting His plan, and living your life as a testimony.

That hope is for them too.

And if you are here today, doubting, let me tell you, friend:

That hope is for you.

This doesn’t mean that you’re perfect, but rather that you are forgiven and given the chance to try again. Redemption comes with taking the step of repentance. (Mark 1:15)

June starts tomorrow and this month, maybe you feel called to take a new step and be bold in your faith in a way that you haven’t been before. You are called to live a life of faith, leaving behind your old ways, and the Lord has blessed you with that chance. Don’t be ashamed of your past, but rather be bold about how the Lord has changed your life. (2 Timothy 1:7) to . Praise Him for it! And in a form of praise, you can follow Him in the way that we were designed to.
