In Luke chapter three, we read about John the Baptist telling people ‘the good news.’ And it’s interesting because, for us today, the ‘good news’ is the Gospel, which is that Jesus came down to earth and died as a sacrifice for our sins, and after three days, was raised from the grave and ascended into heaven.

But at this point in history, that hasn’t happened. And from what we can read in Scripture, John the Baptist (and many others) didn’t know what ‘the good news’ would mean to us later. But to John, this was the good news:

He is coming.

The good news that John would proclaim is the same good news that we often forget about!

He is coming.

While the story of Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection is crucial to the Christian belief (1 Corinthians 15:14), we forget the fourth most important part: Jesus is coming back. (Acts 1:11)

We read that He has come and He is coming.

There is so much blessing in knowing that the Lord Jesus Christ is returning someday. He has not left us to die an ugly death while He’s partying up in heaven. No! He has left us here to do the good work that John the Baptism himself was doing so that when He returns, the Lord will have many, many people who have ‘come to a knowledge of the truth.’ (1 Timothy 2:3-4)

In Philippians one, it says this:

‘[The Lord] who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.’
Philippians 1:6 NIV

As of right now, our mission is to serve our God and serve others. To follow the commandments He gave us through Jesus and Jesus’s life.

So as we step into this week, I encourage you all: live the life that we are called to live!
