My parents agreed to get matching tattoos with me for my eighteenth birthday in November, and I’ve been using the time from now to then to think about what I want to mutilate my skin with. After much contemplation, a Bible verse came to mind:

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
3 John 1:4 NIV

With our military experience and moving testimonies, I cherish the idea of knowing that wherever we are, wherever I may be, there is no greater joy for my parents than knowing that I am walking in the truth with the Lord.

This verse isn’t a statement of “Wow, look at what my kid is doing, so cool,” but it’s more along the lines of “Now, the Lord isn’t simply walking with my children, but my children are walking with Him in return.”

We are given the chance to walk with the Lord, and while He is always walking with us, ready for us to begin walking in step with Him, there comes a time when we need to ask ourselves: Am I letting Him do all the walking for me?

There’s a lot of blessing in knowing that the Lord walks with us even if we don’t immediately walk with Him. However, you won’t grow if you insist on Him carrying you or dragging you the whole way. It’s time for you to take the step to walk with Him too.

If you’re looking for ‘a sign’ that beginning to walk with Him or a reason for continuing to walk with Him is the right decision, then consider this: you will never regret walking with the Lord.

There has never been a moment in my life that I have regretted choosing the Lord in return. That doesn’t make it easy but life is not easy (which I’m sure you’ve heard).

But there is encouragement in knowing that the Lord is with us along the way.

He’s walking with us in the long, deep valleys. (Psalm 23:4)

He’s sitting with us in the lions’ den. (Daniel 6)

He’s cheering us on in the celebrations. (Zephaniah 3:17)

There is joy in knowing and walking with the Lord.

In Philippians, Paul writes about having found ‘the secret of contentment.’ (Philippians 4:11-13) He writes that it’s only because of Christ that this is possible.

As we step into this week, I encourage you to make the decision to walk with the Lord this week. It’s a choice that you have to make over and over again, but it’s one worth choosing.
