Philippians 2:14-16 NIV

I love this verse, partially because of the sentence, “you will shine among them like stars in the sky” because of that beautiful visual, and partially because this verse is such a great example of how we should live.

Paul is writing to a church in Philippi and he is in prison. If you remember my post, Paul’s Secret of Contentment, we read that the book of Philippians is considered the most joyful book in the Bible—despite it’s author being in prison at the time of it being written.

Now, this chapter talks a lot about humility and imitating Christ. It paints a picture of brothers and sisters in Christ living in peace with each other and striving to live for each other. If that doesn’t make sense, let me elaborate.

Looking at verses one through eleven, Paul is emphasizing the importance of putting others before yourself and showing compassion to one another.

He goes on to write about working without grumbling which is where we come to the verses I put above.

The world that we live in is full of complainers—just scroll on Instagram or TikTok for a bit and trust me, you’ll find somebody ranting and crying about their situation. And even in our everyday lives, we complain, right? I know I do.

But we read in these verses that complaints are a sign of dissatisfaction. And dissatisfaction really communicates to the world that God isn’t giving us what we need, when really, it’s the world that’s letting us down. And that’s not a surprise, right? While the world is constantly letting us down, we choose Jesus because of the grace and salvation He gives us and he doesn’t let us down.

By working without complaints, that makes us ‘shine among [others] like stars in the sky as [we] hold firmly to the word of life.’

We can read in John 1 (fantastic chapter, by the way) that Jesus is the Word, the Word of life. By holding firmly to Jesus, we hold firmly to the Word of life, and in the Word of life, we find:

Contentment.

In the first chapter of Romans, Paul writes about sinful humanity. Verses eighteen through thirty-two say that (…) although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. (Romans 1:21 NIV)

It began with dissatisfaction. What is ‘it,’ you ask? Good question. Paul lists exactly what ‘it’ is:

‘…Every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.’ (Romans 1:29-31 NIV)

They are sexually impure, idol-praising, and foolish, yet claiming to be wise. (Romans 1:22-23, 26-27)

When they knew God, but ceased to give Him praise and gratitude, that’s when their hearts failed to recognize the things they were doing were sinful. And then everything went downhill from there.

It’s so important to rest in the contentment of what God has to offer for us—yes, you can still be upset with your situation, but never cease to thank Him for what you do have.

When we find contentment in our situation, compared to the world, we will shine like stars.
