One version of the word ‘praise’ is towdah, a Hebrew word that means “an extension of the hand” used in adoration and praise. Not only that, but it also means a type of expressive praise that implies giving thanks to God for things not yet received.

It’s really so important to praise God for things we haven’t gotten yet. Why? Because it’s a form of trust and by doing so, we learn to trust Him in all circumstances, to praise Him in all circumstances, and to be grateful, even when we don’t know what is going to happen.

It takes a lot to trust God when the unknown is surrounding us. But when the unknown takes hold of our focus, that’s when our focus drifts from God and we start to slowly lost grasp of who He is.

It’s hard to thank God in the midst of bad things, right? Trust me, I have had my fair share of unfortunate experiences, and the very last thing I want to do is get on my knees and say, “Thank you” for something, especially something I don’t even have.

But this mindset teaches us to give it all to God and to behold and learn from His sovereignty.

I encourage you, next time—or even right now, if you’re going through a struggle of some sort—to take time lift your arms (towdah) and say, “God, thank you for being faithful. Thank you for the plans you have for me. Thank you for holding me close in this period of uncertainty.” You may find that your heart posture changes with that prayer.
