He and I have been good friends for around five years and I figured it was time for him to write something for The Faithful Wanderer considering he helped me get started with the idea! In Psalm 109, David talks about people lying about him, how they trade his love for hate. Through all of this David says that he gives himself to prayer, meaning that while those around him are spreading rumors and lying about him, he continues to give it to God. David had trust that God would have his back and bring the truth to light for him.

We see him continuously giving God praise. 

Have you been in a season or many seasons of instances where people are lying about you? In this message we will be talking about the truth about what happens when people lie about others and how words can kill.

The devil has made it his goal to tempt us into slandering and lying about others. He has tried to take peoples’ integrity and put a big huge smear on it, to accuse them so their character can be questioned. 

People are separating themselves from a relationship or from a ministry or from a church, because they let themselves get offended and bothered. 

And then they go out and they go to other ministries, churches, or people and start talking smack about that person or place in order to stop them from being able to conduct business, welcome people into that church, or to make themselves look good by decimating and desecrating the character of the other person. They also do this so that they could get into some higher position of influence leadership, power, or take that person’s place by lowering the character of the person in everyone’s eyes. 

A lot of times it’s personal gain, but soon enough they find themselves hauled into court, like Matthew 5:25-26 says, and they won’t be able to succeed. If that’s happening to you, you can put your faith on God that you know He has your back. 

In Genesis 4 when God did not accept Cain’s offering, Cain went and said to Abel for them to go out to the field. Notice that he said to go out to the field. It was when they went to the field that Cain rose up and killed his brother.

That’s what is still happening today. These people that are lying and slandering people and they do it in the hidden, lonely harvest field. They’re going to the churches, businesses, and the ministries of people who are working to bring the message of Christ into the market place. They go out into the harvest field and kill their brother with their words, because that’s the place where we are supposed to be spreading the word, saving souls healing the sick doing deliverance, and raising the dead. So of course the enemy is going to drive these people that he knows he can control out into the field to kill you because he’s trying to create a separation. He’s trying to cause a split and a rift to happen. 

In the Psalms it talks about in the place of unity where brethren are in agreement with each other, there is the place where God commands the blessing. A house divided against itself cannot stand and the devil knows this. He doesn’t want them to succeed in the harvest field so he’s going to go out into the field and spill their blood. 

Unfortunately there are so many people and believers who believe these lies who don’t have the spirit of discernment. The devil twists the facts of an event or story and tells the twisted truth to its’ neighbors.

So what happens next?

God goes to Cain and asks where his brother is and Cain responds by saying, “I’m not my brother’s keeper.” 

That’s what we have lost.

We’ve lost our respect and honor for each other and don’t try and love each other.

We forget to try and keep relationships pure by staying humble, by repenting when we are wrong, and by asking for forgiveness when we sin instead of pointing fingers and getting defensive. 

We need to be keepers of our brothers and sisters. We don’t always see the most beautiful side of people. Especially people who are close to you. We shouldn’t see that and go tell other people. We should be keeping them by leading them towards righteousness, towards the presence of God, help them stay in unity with God. Not going off and ratting them out to everyone anytime they might slip up!

What happens next is it says that God told him that Abel’s blood is crying out to him from the ground. When you slander and lie about someone you are murdering them and their blood is spilled on the ground and their blood cries out to the lord for justice to be taken. And so the Lord cursed Cain so that the earth would not yield to him and he would go on as a stranger and a fugitive. Cain said to the Lord in fear that if anyone would find him they would kill him and the Lord told Cain that if anyone killed him, they would be punished seven-fold of Cain’s punishment. 

This means that if you go out and start to slander and talk bad about the person that lied about you, you will spilling their blood. You don’t repay Cain who murdered you by going out and killing Cain, because then you’re a murderer too. Now if someone asks you about the situation or something similar to that, you will have to be honest and truthful but don’t get into the nitty gritty details. If you need to talk to someone like a youth pastor, a parent, or a leader about it, you can. Sometimes we just need to air out, but don’t fall into gossip about it. You don’t want to be like those who hurt you, right?

I had a friend who lied about me and told people that I did something that I didn’t do. For a long time I was thought to have done something wrong by everyone I knew and when I found out, I was extremely hurt. But I chose to stay quiet, give it to God, and let him handle it. I trusted him and one day, He brought everything to light and restored my friendships. 

Okay, so let’s say you’ve done all the right things. You’ve stayed in prayer, you’ve trusted the Lord with it, and you’ve been faithful to who you are and your character. After a while things settle down and it’s not as big of a deal and it’s chilled out, but then all of sudden it happens again—maybe by the same person or a completely different person. Now you’re dealing with the same situations of people lying about you or talking bad about you and trying to keep you down. 

The reason isn’t because God failed his promise of justice. It’s because of sin and human nature.

As crazy as it sounds, this repeated process of that person or situation going from place to place and following the same pattern is actually good for you. It will grow your humility and trust and it will cause you to cling to the Lord closer than ever. Hold your peace, be calm, and stay fervent in prayer. 

Can you pray these things in prayer? Of course! This is in scripture and there is plenty of other scriptures to back this up. The Bible talks about how those who dig a pit for another will fall into it themselves and those who break into a hedge a snake will come and bite them. These are real scriptures. You can pray and speak these over your life and situation. You aren’t cursing them, you’re saying, “This is what the Scripture says. God, either change them or have Your word in this context come to pass, but give them a chance to repent, Lord.”
