It’s easy to look at a world full of words and think that yours aren’t needed. Hasn’t it all been said before? I mean, the themes and topics that we write about are as old as history itself. Every generation has something to say about love, heartbreak, healing, faith, and the journey of being human.

But what’s new, what has never existed before, is you.

Yes, it may feel safer when we write to sound like someone who is successful. There’s less risk when we are an echo instead of an original. But nobody likes copies of the same book—so don’t write a copy because the original was so good!

Be courageous and write in a way that scares you a little.

A lot of people need to hear your words, just like you need to hear the words of others.

One of my favorite chapters in the Bible is the first chapter of John. Now, this book is already so good and a great place to start if you’re reading the Bible or New Testament for the first time. But one of the reasons I love it so much is because John was a writer. In the first chapter, you can immediately see how fluent and lyrical he is when it comes to words and writing.

I aspire to be like John when it comes to writing about my faith (seriously, go read John 1 because I promise, it’s worth it, he is a literal poet) because he doesn’t sugarcoat the truth or create this soft way of telling the Gospel to you. Rather, he tells it in his own way, and in a way that would connect with other people.

Now we look at the other three Gospels: Matthew, Mark, and Luke. They all tell the same stories of Jesus—give or take some details and events—but each in their own way.

We can do the same today! You have a story to tell and so does the person next to you—you may even have the same story to tell. But you’re not going to tell it differently because you’re writers: writers tell stories in ways that nobody else can think of.

So. What is something that you want to write or talk about? Why are you scared to share it? And how can you tell that story in a way that is uniquely YOU?
