There’s this quote (that is typically attributed to C.S. Lewis but he actually didn’t say or write this) that says, “Be weird. Be random. Be who you are. Because you never know who would love the person you hide.“

I mean, what is there to not love about this quote?

Now, a lot of Christians don’t often encourage the whole ‘be who you are’ thing due to the fact that the person we are is often a messed up person. But I think that encouraging it—to a degree—is important, especially with the last sentence of this quote. Why, you ask?

Because we need to know who loves the person that we hide.

Who is going to love that person, you ask?

Who is going to love the version of me that is anxious, depressed, lonely, angry, fearful, abused and scarred? The version that hides tears at school and lets them out for hours in the night? The version that pretends I’m happy when really I want someone to love me? The version that says, “I’m okay” when really my world is falling apart?

Y’all, I think that I’ve said this many times here on The Faithful Wanderer, but hear me out: God is going to love that person.

We need to know that God is going to love the person we hide. And let me tell you: it’s not because of anything YOU have ever done. I heard this other phrase that said, “If you think you can change God’s mind about his love for you, think again. You’re not that powerful.”

It’s a bit of a sarcastic comment that I love. (I’m all about sarcasm.) But it’s true: the things you do are not powerful enough to make God love you more or love you less. The amount of his love for you is something the brain is incapable of comprehending—and that’s okay. Knowing how much God loves us is not the point—but rather, realizing that he does.

Not everybody is going to love the person that you hide. And in all honesty, that’s okay. Because we can know that Somebody does love the person that you hide.
