Have you ever thought about what you would do if you had one day left to live?

Go ahead and answer that question right now—you have one day left to live, twenty-four hours. What would you do? Who would you see? Talk to? Go to?

My answer has always been along the lines of ‘I would want to see all my friends and family or travel somewhere I’ve always wanted to see.” But the people was my priority—I’d want to spend my twenty-four hours with everyone I loved.

There’s a well-known figure from history who took his last day and used it, not for his own choices, but to serve and love others one last time.

‘After that, he [Jesus] poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.’
John 13:5 NIV

Jesus spent his last night washing his disciples’ disgusting, dirt-covered, calloused feet. This wasn’t a job for the Son of God—during that time, one of the home’s servants would have done this. But Jesus, the servant of God, chose to do it himself. He wanted to serve his friends one last time before he was arrested and crucified.

Obviously we can learn many things from Jesus Christ, but one huge thing is this: he chose to serve, no matter who it was, what it was, and how much time he had left. We know that Jesus’ mother and brothers’ were alive and near—he could have chosen to be with them one last time. Or maybe indulge in good food and a fun time.

But instead he chose to serve because he knew that his time was limited. This wasn’t for himself but for his friends. He wanted to provide comfort for them.

It’s a heartbreaking yet beautiful thing.

Make your last chance to live be your last chance to serve.

‘Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.’
