Have you heard the saying, “A watched pot never boils?”
Maybe you’ve done some cooking and you have to wait hours (or maybe ten minutes tops) for water to boil. You sit there, waiting and waiting…and it doesn’t boil. At least not as fast as you want it to, right? And you scream inwardly, “WHY WON’T YOU BOIL FASTER?!”
But then if you get distracted for a millisecond, your pot starts to overflow with the boiling, bubbly water and you curse yourself for not watching it more closely.
I was thinking about life (as one does) and this phrase popped in my mind. Then I said to myself, “We do the same thing with our lives.”
You see, when we watch our lives for something that we want or are expecting (like the water to start boiling), it doesn’t come quickly enough. Or we sit there impatiently, unable to do anything about it, and saying, “WHY WON’T YOU HAPPEN FASTER?!”
But then sometimes it’s the opposite. Sometimes we get distracted and BOOM! Our lives start to bubble over the brim and we are caught off guard.
Now, the boiling water is just an example. Sometimes this water is a good thing, and sometimes it’s a not-so good thing, sometimes even a horrible thing.
Have you ever wanted something to happen and then that’s all you look for in your life.
Maybe you asked God to speak to you and you paid attention to every single detail…and he didn’t speak.
Maybe you really, really liked a boy and waited for him to ask you out…and he didn’t.
Maybe you asked your parents for something and when you waited for their answer…it was no.
Or have you ever wanted something, forgotten about it, and then it surprised you by suddenly popping up unexpectedly? Maybe instead, you had asked your parents for something and they didn’t give you an answer…until they surprised you with yes!
This post might not make sense, but what I’m trying to say is this: we often watch our lives like a boiling pot: either with a hawk’s eye or we get distracted.
How are you watching your life today?
If you’re watching it with the eye of a hawk, maybe you need to step away for a bit. And if you’re too far away, maybe you need to look into your life and see what’s going on.
Just some random thoughts that were swirling around in my brain! Hope you enjoyed and let me know in the comments: do you often watch your life with a hawks eye or no?

P.S. On Thursday (or maybe Saturday, depending on how my schedule works out) I have an interview coming out—and it’s a Zoom call (haven’t done one of those in a while!) so be on the lookout for that!😉
