Have you ever been blessed and then ended up feeling cursed? Let me explain: it feels like God gives us blessings andβ¦they end up being curses. Now, obviously he isnβt giving us curses or cursing us, so Iβm going to let you read this quote from Winnie-the-Pooh and then Iβll get into what I mean.
βHow lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.β ~Winnie-the-Pooh
Nowβconnecting that quote to my first paragraph. Friendships, theyβre great, right? Friends, pastors, family, small groups, little kids, coworkers, friends are great.
And they are a blessing to have. A blessing given to us by God.
But then these relationships, there might come a day when you have to sayβ¦goodbye. And thatβs when the relationship might start to feel like a curse. The blessing might start to feel like a curse.
And you think to yourself, βWhy the heck did God give me this burden?! Why give me something so good when he knew Iβd have to say goodbye to it? What was the whole point if it ends after goodbye?β
Friend, have you ever thought: how lucky you are to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard?
I know, it might sound cheesy or dumb or maybe even like brainwash. But itβs true: God could have given us stuff we wish we could say goodbye to. And he mightβsome relationships need to end, but the good ones donβt.
Whether you are saying goodbye for now or saying goodbye until heaven, remember: you are so luckyβor rather, so blessedβto have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.
This has really changed my perspective in the past few months. My thoughts have been filled with, βWhy did God put me in this church that Iβve made a home when Iβm just going to leave? Why did he help me cultivate these friendships? Why did I choose to get baptized here when I might never come back? Why why why why why?β
But then I thought about it: would I be in the same place that I am today without this church, this community, small group, pastor, and friends? Heck no. In all honesty, I probably wouldnβt have gotten baptized for a long time if it wasnβt for my small group leaders, pastor, and best friend that helped me along the way and took that step with me.
Your relationships, whether you say goodbye or not, are going to shape your life. And so I am really glad that I have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. Because I donβt know where I would be without them.
βDear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.β
