In the famous book, The Lion The Witch, and The Wardrobe, one of the Pevensie siblings, Susan, asks Mr. Beaver, “Is the lion Aslan safe?”

Mr Beaver replies, “Safe? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”

If you haven’t read The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, I highly, highly recommend it. It is an allegory of the Gospel—how Jesus sacrificed his life for the sinners and the battle against sin.

Now, a common misconception about God (if you are a Christian) is that he’s safe. Well, as Mr. Beaver so wisely quipped: Who said anything about safe?

And the truth is, God is not safe.

Before you go arguing with me, hear me out: when I say God isn’t safe, I don’t mean that he’s waving red flags all around, okay?

What I do mean is this: God isn’t safe, at least, not to a degree. He isn’t a safe king who is going to bend to our will. He is a divine being who has unbelievable and unpredictable power. But he is good. He is a safe place and Father for his children to go to, but if you cross his lines and disobey him? He isn’t safe.

Since we’re already on the topic of Narnia, I want you to picture a lion. Now, a lion will eat other animals, right? It will kill animals, especially if it crosses the line, the territory. (After all, a hyena can’t just waltz into a lion pride expecting to be unharmed, right?)

But then picture a lion, not eating other animals, but with its cub. Check out the video below and watch how the lion plays with its cubs.

The lion, he is playful and kind with his cubs. But when something threatens his cubs? He’s not anywhere near safe–if anything, he’s downright terrifying.

All of this is the same with God: we, his cubs, are in safe hands. He’s not going to hurt us because he is good. But he is not a God that will be lazy and chill, he’s going to be scary if he needs to do take action.
