“I, take thee, to be my wedded wife/husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.”

You’ve likely heard this, right? They are your traditional wedding vows.

And God wants to say these things to you.

(Of course, maybe cut out the wedded wife or husband and replace it with ‘child’?)

“I take you to be my child, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.”

So you get what I’m saying—wedding vows are important! They are supposed to be a binding vow that shows the love of the couple. It’s a public sign of a couple saying they love each other, are dedicating their lives to each other, and will prove to be faithful to one another.

And then baptism comes in: baptism is a public sign for you to dedicate your life to God because you love him.

When I was considering getting baptized, my pastor explained it to me like this: God is your officiant and your groom. He’s asking you to spend the rest of your life with him, loving him, helping him, and he will love you and help you in return.

In sickness and in health.

God is going to stay true to you through it all, even if you aren’t faithful to him, even if you cheat on him, he will be faithful.

And the cool part? Death isn’t the end! The part in the wedding vows is not applicable to your faith—because even after death, you can spend the rest of your life with God. He loves you so much that he wants to spend all of eternity with you.

(That’s crazy—even I wouldn’t want to spend eternity with me! But God does, so that’s good news.)

”As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”’
Matthew 3:16-17 NIV
