‘My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.’
Psalms 51:17 NIV

I recently read this verse the other day, and it really spoke to me and touched me.

“My sacrifice is a broken spirit. God, you will not despise a broken heart.” (Paraphrased.)

All we have to give is a broken heart. Your heart is not perfect–nor will it ever be. But your heart is exactly what God wants.

Remember my post about the Japanese art, Kintsugi? This is what God is going to do for your broken heart: mend it and make it beautiful.

Your broken heart is not going to go to waste.

This is a short post, but I really wanted to share this verse with you guys. I hope it was encouraging–have a great day! <3

Here are some different translations and versions of that verse that I really like:

~‘Heart-shattered lives ready for love don’t for a moment escape God’s notice.’ Psalm 51:17 The Message (MSG)

~‘The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.’ Psalms 51:17 New Living Translation (NLT)

~‘The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit. You will not despise a broken and humbled heart, God.’ Psalms 51:17 Christian Standard Bible (CSB)

~‘The sacrifice God wants is a willing spirit. God, you will not reject a heart that is broken and sorry for its sin.’ Psalms 51:17 International Children’s Bible (ICB)

Hi Willow. I enjoyed this post. I agree that one’s broken heart doesn’t have to go to waste if we give it to God like you said. I think a broken heart is like suffering (I know a broken heart is part of suffering but not all suffering is from a broken heart)- the only one who can waste a broken heart or suffering is us- God won’t let either go to waste if we give them to him. God bless you.
