One of the best examples of friendship in the Bible is the story of Jonathon and David.

Jonathon was prince, the son of King Saul. He was also in line to be king, once his father died.And David was a shepherd boy who had been anointed by the prophet Samuel, and was going to take over as king.

Already an unlikely friendship, right? Not to mention, Saul wanted to kill David (because David was younger, stronger, handsomer, and going to be king), so Jonathon was constantly hearing his father rant and talk about his hate for David.

And, David loved Jonathon’s sister, Michal, who loved him back (1 Samuel 18:28-29) which can sometimes cause problems for best friends.

In all honesty, this friendship is one that should be ruined after day one. But it wasn’t—in fact, it grew and thrived, despite the family problems, royal problems, and differences.

Jonathon even told David in 1 Samuel 20 that their friendship mattered the most, he would rebel against his father’s plans to kill David so that David would stay alive.

Your circumstances do not define your relationships. This is proven all throughout the Bible too—Paul and God, Jesus and the poor, the disciples and Matthew, and many more.

Where and when you are living also determines what kinds of relationships you ‘have’ to have. These days, it feels like you can only be friends with the cool, popular, trendy people. But are they going to benefit your life? Maybe, maybe not. That’s your job to find out, in all aspects of your relationships.
