Now, I’m going to back up a bit from before we adopted my little brother.

So my family wanted to adopt a kid. We were hoping to adopt a child from the Philippines, where my great-grandmother is from. We were given the choice of the child we could adopt—we’d be given a child who would be matched with us, and then my parents would discuss whether or not this was ‘the child’. It took about three-ish years before we adopted.

And the whole process was risky.

Each time we were matched, we took a risk by saying ‘no’ and waiting for another match, another child.

When we finally were introduced to a boy—not from the Philippines, but from Texas—we took a risk by saying, “Yes, we’ll adopt him.”

Then we took a further risk because he had special needs, was a twin separated from his brother, had been adopted once already, and we would be his third family. So there was a lot of emotional trauma and physical needs that we felt we had to meet.

But all these risks that spanned over several years? They were all worth it because they are what blessed me with a brother who is slightly quirky and who has given me the memories of a lifetime.

Some big risks are the best risks.
