There is a form of Japanese art called hirkaru dorodango, or, ‘shiny dumpling.’

It’s fascinating, because if you look at the picture for this post, you see a shiny, beautiful chocolatey-looking ball. Fun fact: it’s dirt.

It is quite literally dirt. Nothing special in it, but it is specially made. And if you watch the video above, (it’s only a one minute and 47 seconds long) each one is pretty different.

As I was looking through pictures and videos of this, I was realizing how this is a beautiful example of humans. If you read my post about Kintsugi: Golden Joinery, then you’ve read about how broken pieces of pottery are melded with gold to make a beautiful piece of art. And this dorodango has similar meaning.

First of all, dirt is boring. Sometimes it’s gross, it gets everything dirty (no surprise there), and it’s a dull brown. But to God, that’s just fine. Because he can turn us into a shiny, amazing piece of art. He doesn’t need gold, or pretty colors. All he needs is you and his power.

Second of all—we were formed in the dust of the earth. (Genesis 2:7) This is especially cool to me! I mean, we are not dirt, but that is what Adam was made from, and that’s just another cool symbolism.

So just know that you don’t need anything fancy to be beautiful! You are still a piece of art, shaped by the hands of the Creator, the Potter, Yahweh.
