There are five levels of friendship.

  1. Stranger. (Obviously not friends, but you’ll get there. 😉)
  2. Acquaintance. You know each other fine, but you’re not friends.
  3. Casual friends. You have similar interests, you can carry the conversation, but you don’t do things together, like hanging out.
  4. Good friends. You have shared experiences, you’ve hung out. You’re really close, great job!
  5. Best friends. The highest level. You’d do anything for this friend, and they’d do the same for you. You share interests, experiences, secrets, and you’d probably buy them Starbucks if they forgot their wallet while y’all were hanging out.

Now. I have a handful of people who are on this list (except for number one), but only a few who are on Best Friends level.

For most relationships, I’d say that I’m on Casual or Good Friends. I don’t have too many Acquaintances, unless they’re the tenth grade boys at my youth group. (Sorry, guys.)

But here’s a question that applies to these five chairs:

What level are you on with God?

You might be Strangers, or maybe you’re Good Friends.

Or maybe, you used to be Best Friends but after some trials, you feel more like Acquaintances.

But the thing is, if you want to get to a higher level with God, you can’t just sit there. Your relationship with God is just like every other relationship: it requires work. You’re not going to get a Best Friend if it’s one-sided, if God is the only one putting effort in. That’s not how friends work, friends both put in effort into the relationship.

And I assure you, God is putting in effort.

But are you?

Here’s another thought:

What if you’re Best Friends? Can you get to a higher level? Or do you just stay there, stuck?

Well, the same thought from above applies to this: you have to put in effort. Even if you’re Best Friends now, that doesn’t mean you are automatically Best Friends forever.

So put in effort. In all your relationships, especially with God.

“For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you.”
‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭1‬:‭4‬ ‭NIV‬‬
