The picture above is the cover of one of my favorite songs, and it has a really important message I wanted to share with yโall today.
The name is kind of alarming, my brother saw it once and was like, โWillow that looks, like, bad. Why are you listening to that?โ Well, first of all, never judge a book by its cover (or a song by its title), and second, this song speaks an important truth, one that is honestly kind of hard to accept, just like the name of this song. (If it helps, the song is a Christian song but Iโm not sure if that changes your mind or notโฆ๐)
I recommend listening to the song before reading this so youโve heard the lyrics at least one, but if not thatโs totally cool too.
Hereโs the Spotify link if you wanna listen.
So the summary of the first verse talks about how the devil, very attractive to our sinful desires, is a liar, a cheater, a false prophet and is not a Godly preacher. But Satan, he knows how to โpreachโ to make sin good looking and very pretty to our eyes. So we fall for him and his lies.
Like I said, this song has an important truth to it that a lot of Christian artists donโt sing about! (By the way, Shaya Zamoraโs music is amazing. Heโs kinda got this moody, Hozier-like voice and itโs awesome. Go listen to his music.)
The song goes on to talk about how the devil says he loves you, but he doesnโt truly love you, he doesnโt actually care to make things good for you permanently, and he turns you into a monster. Now, I donโt mean bad monster. I mean a hurting monster. (This sounds like a little kid bookโฆa hurting monster who just wants a ValentineโฆI think I saw a book like that a Barnes and Noble. Moving on.) A monster that is willing to do anything to make themself feel better because the spot theyโre inโitโs bad.
Then, the song turns. It stops talking about the devil and becomes a cry for help from God.
โLord protect me from the wicked
Let me let โem know your name
Let me let โem know your name
Sacrifices you made, wonโt let โem be in vain
Lord, itโs your world, weโre just spinninโ in it
Lord, itโs your world, weโre just livinโ in it.โ
And after a few more lines, it turns and finishes with another story: a call for help from fellow Christians and humans:
โBless those you curse
Bless those you hurt
Death to your sin
Gather the church.โ
After hearing this song, my opinion on the devil changed. Now I donโt believe that everything he has to offer looks bad. Now I believe that some things he has to offer look good and beautiful. Thatโs how the devil works: taking bad things and making them look good. Heโs a pro a that. But luckily, we have ways to resist him and his temptations!
โPut on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devilโs schemes. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.โ
โญโญEphesiansโฌ โญ6โฌ:โญ11โฌ, โญ14โฌ-โญ17โฌ โญNIVโฌโฌ
We have our armor of God (honestly though, that sounds super cheesy, no offense) to protect us from the devil.
So. What do you think of this song and its message?
Thanks for reading!
