Pretty Little Devil by Shaya Zamora

The picture above is the cover of one of my favorite songs, and it has a really important message I wanted to share with yโ€™all today.

The name is kind of alarming, my brother saw it once and was like, โ€œWillow that looks, like, bad. Why are you listening to that?โ€ Well, first of all, never judge a book by its cover (or a song by its title), and second, this song speaks an important truth, one that is honestly kind of hard to accept, just like the name of this song. (If it helps, the song is a Christian song but Iโ€™m not sure if that changes your mind or notโ€ฆ๐Ÿ˜‚)

I recommend listening to the song before reading this so youโ€™ve heard the lyrics at least one, but if not thatโ€™s totally cool too.

Hereโ€™s the Spotify link if you wanna listen.

So the summary of the first verse talks about how the devil, very attractive to our sinful desires, is a liar, a cheater, a false prophet and is not a Godly preacher. But Satan, he knows how to โ€œpreachโ€ to make sin good looking and very pretty to our eyes. So we fall for him and his lies.

Like I said, this song has an important truth to it that a lot of Christian artists donโ€™t sing about! (By the way, Shaya Zamoraโ€™s music is amazing. Heโ€™s kinda got this moody, Hozier-like voice and itโ€™s awesome. Go listen to his music.)

The song goes on to talk about how the devil says he loves you, but he doesnโ€™t truly love you, he doesnโ€™t actually care to make things good for you permanently, and he turns you into a monster. Now, I donโ€™t mean bad monster. I mean a hurting monster. (This sounds like a little kid bookโ€ฆa hurting monster who just wants a Valentineโ€ฆI think I saw a book like that a Barnes and Noble. Moving on.) A monster that is willing to do anything to make themself feel better because the spot theyโ€™re inโ€”itโ€™s bad.

Then, the song turns. It stops talking about the devil and becomes a cry for help from God.

โ€œLord protect me from the wicked

Let me let โ€˜em know your name

Let me let โ€˜em know your name

Sacrifices you made, wonโ€™t let โ€˜em be in vain

Lord, itโ€™s your world, weโ€™re just spinninโ€™ in it

Lord, itโ€™s your world, weโ€™re just livinโ€™ in it.โ€

And after a few more lines, it turns and finishes with another story: a call for help from fellow Christians and humans:

โ€œBless those you curse

Bless those you hurt

Death to your sin

Gather the church.โ€

After hearing this song, my opinion on the devil changed. Now I donโ€™t believe that everything he has to offer looks bad. Now I believe that some things he has to offer look good and beautiful. Thatโ€™s how the devil works: taking bad things and making them look good. Heโ€™s a pro a that. But luckily, we have ways to resist him and his temptations!

โ€œPut on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devilโ€™s schemes. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

We have our armor of God (honestly though, that sounds super cheesy, no offense) to protect us from the devil.

So. What do you think of this song and its message?

Thanks for reading!

This is interesting. Don’t judge a song by its album cover, right?

Alright, great!! Again, no pressure; just curious. I just emailed Scott, in fact, because I want to add some of the topics that I mentioned earlier in my “Wayward Son” post.

Okay, sweet! Ooh, that sounds really awesome! I’m excited to read everyone’s writing. Also, one question: when we send you our writing for the HH post, should we email you individually or in the email thread with all the post info?

You can just email me separately. That’s what everyone else did. I just did a group email, so I wouldn’t have to do a bunch of individual ones
