Hey y’all! I was thinking about life the other day and was like, “Hm. I think that my secular music is…impacting me in a not-so-positive way.”
Up until about a year ago, I listened to about zero secular music. Now, take note that I’m a homeschooled Christian teenager, and was brainwashed by my parents (just kidding!!!!!!). But I didn’t listen to secular music because in my mind it was all ‘bad’ but I know that’s not true, (although some of it is bad). (This is pretty embarrassing to write.) So I listened to only Christian music, which was great! I didn’t have a problem with that.
When I did start listening to secular music, I found that I chose to listen to that over listening to Christian and worship music. But after I went on a weekend retreat with my youth group, I’ve started my morning off with a worship song before I listen to any other music.
And then I read BINØ’s post here about fasting from screens for a week and then I read his other post (here) about taking a break from secular music. I was inspired by that and was like, “Ayyyy, that’s pretty brilliant.” Thinking about the secular music I listen to, while some of it is REALLY good, a handful of the songs are sad breakup songs. (Or songs about falling in love by Benson Boone…)
So, that leads me to the point of this post! Starting on February 1st to February 28th, I am taking a break from secular music. Now, I might hear it in the car or with friends, but I am choosing to personally only listen to my Christian and worship music for a month. (I just realized that February isn’t even a whole month but that’s okay.) On March 1st, I’ll make a post about how it impacted me, my mental health, my spiritual health, and my emotional health!
Yep. Thanks for reading!
