William Sloke woke up to the screams and horrors of the battlefield. His mind raced as an explosion just 20 feet from him consumed the lives of three soldiers. Laying in the sand behind an anti-landing obstacle, William, or Bill as his friends called him, peaked up from his cover to see where the enemy fire was coming from. There were concrete huts on the ridge, each with a 50 caliber machine gun, tearing down the advancing U.S. soldiers. Today was the one day that the allies could turn the tide of the war: D-Day and William was in the middle of it all.
Not sure on what to do, William tries to calm himself down from all of the adrenaline going through his head. He thinks of the things that matter most to him. He thinks of the girl he wants to marry, Charlotte. He promised Charlotte that they would get married as soon as he got back, but Charlotte feared the worst. He then thinks of the Church. He misses church and the service. But what he missed most was the worship. William has been a Christian all of his life and he had a good connection with the Lord. Although he followed what the Word said, he wanted to get into the action when the United States entered the war. William always wondered if there was something supernatural happening as this war raged on.
“Sloke! Get your butt moving!”
William shook out the thoughts and looked up. His squadron sergeant was motioning for him to get moving on up the beach. Here we go, thought William, Do or die. William got up from his cover and started to run, praying to God that this was not his time. He saw the machine gun cease fire, reload, and pivot towards him. Almost to the rock wall, William ran like he had never run before. The machine gun started to fire and William had to dive to make the cover.
William smacked his head against the wall and fell down. But his head was not the primary source of pain that he was feeling. He looked down and saw that his leg was shot; he was losing blood fast. William’s childhood friend, Roy, happened to be in the same squadron as William. William looked all around for his friend and spotted him on the wall, but about 10 feet away. Every soldier looked the same, so Roy did not see William when he made it to the wall.
“R-Roy!” William called, “Roy!”
Roy heard his name and looked around until he spotted William laying on the ground. He rushed over to William and knelt by his side.
“Bill! Are you alright? It sure is hell out here.”
“M-my leg. I-i got s-shot,” said William trying not to pass out.
Roy, not knowing what to do, did the first thing that came to his mind. He reached over and touched the bullet wound on William’s leg. William cried and in pain, “What the hell are you doing?” said William forgetting all about his God in that moment.
Roy ignored William and started to pray, “Dear heavenly father, I come before you today, in the midst of battle, to ask that you heal William’s leg. You see the conflict in the world right now and I ask that if we are to beat the Nazis, the servants of the devil, we need good and Godly men like William to fight these bastards! Excuse my french Lord, but you know it’s true. So I finish this prayer knowing that you are a good and loving God and we praise you O Lord! In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
On the word of Amen, William felt no more pain and when he looked down at his leg, the wound was nothing but untouched skin. He looked at Roy in amazement and said, “The Lord be with us.”
“The Lord be with us,” said Roy.
