Almost a year ago I read a book called Barking to the Choir by Gregory Boyle. My mom recommended it to me and I thought it sounded interesting, but wasn’t too eager to read it. Then I read it and was hooked!
Now, Gregory Boyle’s books are not fiction, but are nonfictional books with faith and spirituality, humor, and heartbreaking stories. It’s honestly all you could ever want in a piece of nonfiction. You should really check them all out here.
Gregory Boyle is a Jesuit priest who created the largest gang intervention and rehabilitation center in the world. There are now multiple locations, cafes, and stores, and Father Boyle often travels the country to speak. He has some really inspiring points in all his books (one of which I got for Christmas).
One big thing I loved was Father Greg’s motto for Homeboy Industries: We aim to heal, not to change. (Paraphrased.)
To be healed, first you have to be broken. We’re all broken in our own ways, which is honestly super hard to admit sometimes, even though it’s true for all people.
And more importantly, as humans, we are not created to be changed but to be healed. We’re broken but we have a Healer. (Psalms 147:3, 1 Timothy 2:5)
Thanks for reading! Have a great day. 🙃
