In the Bible, they talk a lot about sin. It makes sense though, right? Because the Bible is our book of wisdom to help us from falling into a life of sin.

Well, what does sin even mean? Is it:

A. Being a bad person

B. Doing wrong things

C. Choosing wrong over right

D. Something else

If you chose A, B, and C, you aren’t wrong. Those are our modern-day definitions. But if you chose D, then you’re on the right track!

Now, in what we might call “Bible times,” people would go hunting. And if someone shot an arrow at, say, a deer (their target) and missed, they’d say, “Oh, you sinned.”

The Hebrew translation for “sin” means to “miss the mark.” So when the people said, “You sinned,” they meant “You missed the mark.”

But that leads to another question:

What is our mark? Our goal, our target?

Well if you read Matthew 22:34-40, you will hear Jesus say that the two greatest commandments are these: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. And the second is: Love your neighbor as yourself.

Our mark, our target is love. To love our God and to love our neighbors. You might be thinking, “What if something that’s labeled as sin doesn’t have anything to do with love?”

Well, it will in some way. Take gluttony for example. It’s considered one of the seven deadly sins. But how is it connected to love? How can it be considered a sin?

Here’s a couple reasons: Number one, Our bodies are holy temples (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) and were made and bought by God. If we stuff ourselves in an unhealthy way, we are mistreating God’s temples and mistreating what he made and bought, instead of loving them. And number two, it’s selfish, overindulging in food by ourselves instead of loving God’s people and sharing.

In some way, every single sin is connected to not being an action of love.

So what’s our goal?

Love. Everyone, everything.

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed this.🙃❤️
