A few weeks ago, I received an email from a girl named A.R. Raney, saying that she had written a poem based off of one of my writing snippets called “The Old Man and His Sea.”

It was a really beautiful poem and A.R. Raney allowed me to publish it here! So here it is:

No company save the gulls and the sea,

But that was enough for me.

I rested my hand on the old, worn log,

And relished the crisp air from the sea.

*

There I remained, where the waves touch the shore,

As I had for what seemed like forever before,

And the sound of the gulls was the sound of my home,

Down there where the waves touched the shore.

*

I lifted my head and whistled my tune,

As always, and always, carried by the breeze.

Here, nothing must hide; all knew all,

In this place by the sand and the sea.

*

And there I knelt, in the sand, by the sea,

And words like music flowed,

‘Till I told it all to Him who first called

To the birds, and the sky, and the sea

*

Then I saw the dove fly across the sea.

I knew him well – he had come for me.

For so, so long I had waited here

Where the sea had waited with me.

*

I don’t know if I’ll fly,

If I’ll run, if I’ll cry

But I know that I’m coming.

I come to see my Father eye to eye.”

-A.R. Raney.

I hope you enjoyed her beautiful poem!

Beautiful poem, and clever use of animals to tell a story.
