Music is an enormous part of our world. It’s even bigger than sports. You hear music in commercials, movies/shows, TikTok reals, and other videos. We bond over music, using it in the car, at church and just for fun. It’s played in stores, restaurants, and at sports games too. Music is literally everywhere.
But why does music have such an impact on Gen Z specifically?
For starters, music it’s often described as “a digital diary”, something to listen to that gets you, it understands you, the artist has been there before. It’s relatable. Many artists, have lyrics that resonate with the teens and young adults of this world.
Often teens don’t know how to express themselves or describe how they are feeling. Music provides those words and meanings for them. It makes teens feel connected, even though they don’t know the singer/songwriter specifically. It also helps teens feel connected with their peers, bonding over music and lyrics.
Many singer/songwriters of this generation advocate for mental health, as many have mental health issues or difficulties themselves, which is another reason that teens connect with their music.
When people hear lyrics that resonate with them, they feel known. Many teens have said, “When I heard ______, I actually felt understood. The singer literally described my life and feelings.”
Music has an impact. It changes lives and hearts. It bonds generations, grandparents and grandchildren, neighbors, strangers, families. It is a foundation for our world.
